The Biscuit Kings are the latest of many talented ensembles to walk out of that magical door exposing their talent to me. Jeff Goldstein (bass guitar) and Johnny Pierre (vocals, guitars, keyboards, and percussion) is the core of the band with Mr. Pierre penning every incredible tune on the album.

The lyrics of his tunes speak of love, death, and the path to the “Great Unknown” as they so eloquently put it in their bio. Of course, these are topics frequently written about in both literature and song, but for good reason. They are topics in which we all share a bonding interest, aiding the listener in relating to his songs.

The Biscuit Kings hail from Long Island, NY where they have about a twenty-five year history playing in other bands and together. “Hambones and Trombones” is their debut. What a way to get out of the gates with a head of steam. They hit on just about every note, never missing a beat.

They finish the album extremely strong with “Mardi Gras is Over” and the title track “Hambones and Trombones”. When I hear music that resides on the title track I always smile, being reminded of my Papaw and his great love for Jazz in particular. This is Jazz but done Biscuit Kings style.

They’re no amateurs either. Over the years, they have split the bill with the likes of John Hiatt, Dr. John, Hubert Sumlin, Albert King, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Terrance Simien, Maria Muldaur and NRBQ.

The band is somewhat of a cross between Randy Newman, Tom Waits, and one of my all time favorites, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. If you love these artists, you will love The Biscuit Kings.

The band has several guest appearances from Al Speed on Piano and organ, Pete Conway on lead guitar, Bibby N. Dean on drums, Milo Fortunato on drums and percussion, Marco Louis Paul on drums, Luke Beauchamps on dobro and accordion, V. Deferens on synthesizer and string arrangements, Hambone horns – Eddie, Leo, Big Lip Sal, and Walter the Biscuit Strings – Jo Jo, Astrid, Jerome, and Alberta, and finally, Rosie Gelinas – the dog bark.

If you’re ready for some really good music performed by some true pros, then you owe it to yourself and the one you love to add this treasure of twelve great tunes to your collection.

Some of my in-laws live on Long Island. I will be referring them, my Brother-in-law Bill Savage in particular, to see The Biscuit Kings live. They are truly remarkable. ~Review by ‘Rebel’ Rod Ames
